ABOUT THE ARTWORK
While making this painting, I had a feeling I could almost feel the Deers furry ears, I could hear him breathing. I was astonished and could not stop getting closer, thats why Illuminated Deer II is so realistic. This is my second 'Illuminated Deer'. Its inspiration came from Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde, who invented the 'Smart Highways', where car lights are the light source to enlighten these roads. On Facebook (thank you fb) he showed as a kind of joke an article about a Scandinavian problem -cars crashing into reindeers- and the Roosegaarde way of solving this problem. Then this is what could come out. Besides this funny story, my fascination in making the 'Illuminated' lies in the contrast between man and nature and the area where these two come together.

Carolien Wissing (1976) makes canvases in a sober color palette, on which major architectural, abandoned buildings and landscapes can be identified. Twenty years ago Carolien moved from the countryside to the city to study at the Academy of Fine Art. She graduated as an ‘Architectural designer’ but during her study she found out, she was much more fascinated by absorbing the atmosphere of environment. Carolien gets inspired by the peri-urban fringe where the existence of culture fades and slowly merges into the landscape of nature.
