Each painting in the series uses a unique combination of brush strokes and colours, deeply embodying elements that they evoke. There is a constant throughout the series, a cascade, a scale, shimmering variations of colour enriched with subtle reflects. The impressions created set up a resonance with the viewer’s own distinctive sensitivity, leaving one in some way mesmerised. The work unites the practice of calligraphy with the mixing and blending of colours. In traditional Chinese/Japanese calligraphy the stroke is inhabited by the intention behind 气 (Qi or Ki) meaning breath, energy. The shape and scale in Murmurs depicts the movement of the brush and beyond that the intention or inner state of the artist in the making of it. With patience I work on wet canvas experimenting with strokes in search of the desired effect, tension and colour. I spend many hours exploring colours, in miniature format first, sensing what combinations of palette will bring life to the elements I want to represent. Several tones are worked and mixed with a special medium. These trials are undertaken on small linen canvas pieces mimicking the effects and observing the rendering. Once the ingredients feel right I apply these in large format, allowing the energy, colour and movement to galvanise the painting.

United Kingdom
French artist living in London and South of France. My works relate to the many impressions I received and nurtured whilst living in South America, China and Europe where I came across extraordinary lands and people including masters. It is these impressions that surface in my oil paintings somehow ethereal. "Alain du Pontavice's multi-layered paintings defy categories. Are they Surreal? Symbolist? Abstract? Form? Yes, all of those things, but none of the labels cover the complexity of the work." Simon Tait, Art critic.
