Part of an exclusive collection for Saatchi Art's The Other Art Fair 2024 in London, the Invisible Landscapes series is part of an ongoing piece of research inspired by the book Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. I am fascinated by the idea of invisible landscapes. These are our mental realities, images that we create when we picture a much loved place. I love to think that our most treasured places in this world - be it a park, a garden or a forest - are photographed by our minds and formed as a mental picture, our own version of reality which is invisible, yet more real and reachable than the physical landscapes around us. So much so, that when we go back to this place, it is often a little dissimilar than we’ve thought. “Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.” ― Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities MORE ABOUT THE PAINTINGS: • 3 Original, one-of-a-kind abstract paintings by Cristine Balarine • Size: 47 x 47 cm • Medium: Acrylics, watercolour pencils and pastels on Belgian linen • Ready to hang: yes, framed with floating natural local wood frame made in Italy • Signature: verso, also signed Certificate • Year: 2024 • Finish: silky varnish with UV protection • Shipping: in a box Shipped framed, with bespoke locally-made natural wood floating frame made in Italy by local craftsmen. Cristine Balarine is an emerging Brazilian artist based at the Aeolian Islands, Sicily. With a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Bartlett, University College London, and a background in Florentine Renaissance art history, Cristine’s art practice seeks to rebel from the rigour and ultra-rationalization of her architectural background in her large-scale abstract compositions. Cristine's origins in architecture include a wide-ranging experience in several large scale cultural projects, most recently as a site associate architect at the Zayed National Museum of the UAE by Lord Norman Foster. Cristine’s works have been selected to be exhibited in international galleries and events, including a upcoming charity auction at Sotheby's in May 2024, London Biennale 2023, Florence Biennale in Italy, World Art Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Saatchi Art's The Other Art Fair in London. Her passion for collaboration has led her to engage with musicians and DJs, merging visual art and music in immersive performances. She is currently establishing an open studio and gallery space in the picturesque Aeolian Islands in Sicily where she will exhibit her solo works starting in spring.
