Israeli Camel Cavalry Painting

Grim determination of the warriors on patrol is contrasted with mindless merriment of the beasts and is seconded by the black garments of men while the camels are portrayed much more cheerfully. The men seem to be ready to charge forward; to clear the way for tanks. (In reality camel cavalry doesn't exist and the extremely religious types refuse to serve in the army no matter what - they would rather go to prison than join the army. That's why this work portraying draft evaders as heroic Hussar-like warriors in the non-existent and long obsolete service branch is in the Humor section) This painting however is a conversation piece - it just doesn't leave anybody indifferent. The idea for the painting came from well-known 19th century Russian painting "Three bogatyrs". Bogatyr is a mighty warrior. Needless to say this painting is set in today's Israel. It should be also noted that in the Russian painting, whereas the horses are shown as magnificent animals of somewhat fairy-tale looks, they played no role. In this painting the camels are a competing set of characters, who are ignoring their riders while singing as a duet and clearly having fun. That makes it harder to take their riders too seriously. This painting would be most appropriate on a wall in a trendy bar/restaurant or in the offices of a dynamic technology company
