This is my first real self portrait and a change from my usual celebrity subject matter. It's been a difficult few years following the death of my beloved dog 'Venus', since which I have been diagnosed with a painful auto-immune disease. Life is colourful but not without pain and through this new work I want to express the happiness and angst we can all consciously feel. I enjoy the juxtaposition of my two styles, one free and expressive, colourful and unashamed alongside my realistic drawings/ paintings which are carefully executed with the finest of detail. Order amongst chaos. I love to work with different mediums and like the buckling of the paper as paint brings moisture adding spray paint, pen, oil pastel and finally adding the pasteup images to make layers and texture.

Hizze Fletcher was born in Sheffield, England in 1965. Her childhood was marked by the colourful explosion of American music and cultural influences that dominated English society in the 60's and 70's. This early influence of 20th century American art and iconic imagery, combined with an upbringing inspired by strong females such as Madonna, magazines such as The Face and ID, and a passion for fashion, come together to create work that is bold, expressive, textured and graphical. Hizze's early artistic influences include Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jackson Pollock. Hizze became involved in the beginnings of the House music scene in London after graduating from Central St. Martin's in 1989 and has gone on to work in events production for over 20 years, doing arts production for clubs, fashion shows, exhibitions, theme parties and television. Hizze also worked for a number of years as a commercial mosaic artist, producing designs for restaurants, bars and was featured on BBC Gardening Neighbours in 1999. In 2007 Hizze formed Thirteen Art Productions, an arts event production company in Brighton, and has gone on to conceptualise and produce a number of group-art exhibitions and events while establishing a strong connection with the creative community. Hizze also worked as curator for Brighton Pride's Arts & Film Festival 2013/14. In 2014 Hizze opened 'BRUSH', a unique art gallery come hair salon, in Brighton's historic North Laine. At Brush Hizze curates monthly art exhibitions representing the cream of Brighton's establish and emerging artists. www.brushbrighton.co.uk Hizze has been drawing, painting and producing art for many years exhibiting extensively in the UK and Spain.
