"Itapemirim" is a Tupi term that means "small flat stone", through the junction of the terms itá ("stone"), peb ("flattened") and mirim ("small"). In the year 1771, there was a famous attack by the Puris Indians, which made the Serra do Castelo (Castle Montain) miners took refuge on the banks of the Itapemirim River, giving rise to the village of Itapemirim. Coming from Portugal, from the Province of Minho, Municipality of Moções, two brothers, Luiz Rodrigues Soares and Simão Rodrigues Soares bought the Trapiche building, because they saw in the port of Barra do Itapemirim, a reason for great opportunities for trade, since it is located between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. Built in the early 19th century, Trapiche was a warehouse for storage of products to be shipped to other regions, via sea or river. It was the main landing site for immigrants to the South of the State between 1860 and 1883. The work was built using imported materials, had two floors and was, at the time, the office of the State Collection, serving as a support point for exports and imports of products from the Brazil and abroad. It remained in recovery conditions until 1988, when a fire destroyed much of its building. In 1998 it was approved its listing by the State Government. This painting is being shown in the River in Motion exhibition, at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation Museum of Life, in Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition began on December 20, 2019, it was interrupted at the beginning of the pandemic, and then it was reassembled. Due to the great success of visitation, the exhibition was extended by two years, finished at December, 20, 2023. You can watch videos about the exhibition at: https://youtu.be/mFbMcL7KrQ8
