Jayda in motion Painting

A young woman of statuesque beauty and quirky accessories walked into my booth at Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition in June 2017. We talked about her interests in tattoing and art, and I asked her if she would sit for me. She came for three short sittings, about 90 minutes of working time each, and this loose and personal study emerged. Perhaps the painting will intrigue you as to her back story. She is emerging from difficulty, a butterfly in metamorphosis. She does not know how extraordinary she is. I hope my painting showed her that. I love to paint alla prima, wet into wet, on a primed board for this kind of quicker study. The surface lets the paint flow well, preserves the quality of line, and still allows for building impasto, the thickness of paint in the lights that give a three dimensional quality to the work. Completing such a sketch, such as filling in background or clothing, detracts from the energy of the original brushwork, so it is left in its first stage, with additional completion only in the essentials.
