Joshua Gazing East Painting

The cast image of the Stoney, Joshua Twin, has been around Banff since the 1930s, and there are several of them around town. Some of them are on the outsides of the Banff Avenue Bridge: an important decorative element but one that goes unnoticed by users of the bridge because they cannot see them. You have to get away from the bridge and take the long, considered view. From this vantage point, Joshua is gazing east toward his reserve. Or maybe he is looking to Ottawa for assistance. This picture contrasts the natural forest background with the strong geometric shapes of the bridge's substructure, which is interesting in itself. Its also a metaphor about First Nations people having always been present, but who often go unnoticed ("the invisible Indian"). Allusions can also be made to the ideas of First Nations people represented as a medallion or a souvenir. Questions can be asked about the nature of a tourist destination.
