I've spent a lot of my life working in care, with differently abled people. I wanted this picture to be an homage to all the clients and carers who day in, day out, live and work together, often looked down upon by a society which doesn't value them, yet spend huge amounts of time, attention, patience building and sustaining profound relationships in which are often very difficult circumstances. The model in the picture is Kieran, a young man I used to work with who is paraplegic. Despite his physical limitations, Kieran is very positive in his daily approach to life, much more so than many I know who seemingly have everything. He also has a wicked sense of humour and is, in short, a joy and a blessing to work with. Initially I called this piece 'Dancing with Angels' for several reasons. Firstly, people with disabilities in some cultures were called angels; secondly, I think the carers are like angels, and lastly, I'm sure that wherever there are carers and people like Kieran going about their 'simple', daily routines, there are unseen angels accompanying them, sharing in their joy and pain.
