I wanted to depict a classic surf scene but from a different point of view, i wanted to 'hero' the background journey rather than focus on the surf, waves and water. Strangely, you can almost see and hear the surf nearby.

I was born in Detroit but I have spent most of my life living in Australia.
My inspiration comes from my Mum. When I was toying with becoming an artist, she was there saying: "Yep, go for it, don't be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try."
If that doesn't give someone true inspiration to paint from the heart, I don't know what will.
I draw from artists like Helmut Newton and Brett Whiteley and the musical power of Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.
A nice thought: It's not what a painting is, it's what a painting does.
