About The Artwork

Before an artist executes an artwork, there is one thing that he or she considers. That is the elements of design and principles of art. Some of the elements of design used by the artist include; shape, lines, size, etc. Some of the principles used are variety, repetition, rhythm and balance. The elements used by the researcher for the composition include: books of varying sizes and colours, three semi-abstract figures with two reading a book and one sitting behind the computer and an Adinkra symbol. Generally, the concept for the work was inspired by things in the library, but dwells mostly on books on a shelf and on a table and the impression of what goes on in the library which are certainly reading and researching. Compositionally, the painting is divided into six major divisions. At the center of focus in the composition are two figures both reading with two books placed beside the figure on the left and two other books placed at the bottom corner near the figure on the right. At the extreme right corner in the work is another figure sitting behind the computer reaching on the internet, and the four circles placed in-between the two shelves just above the figure on the left side of the composition forming the Adinkra symbol brings variety in the work. The actions portrayed by the three figures were used as a symbol of hard work, research and innovation. The Adinkra symbol “Matemasie” was used by the researcher because traditionally, it represents knowledge and wisdom. The extreme left end and the middle part of the work display an interesting arrangement of books in various directions: vertical, diagonal, straight etc. the division shows various shapes of rectangles. The technique used in the painting is the researcher’s own technique known as “Edges interlacing” which was developed from the hard edge technique. In this technique the colours interlace at the edges forming different interesting patterns in the work. The colour scheme for the work is done in cool colours (shades of blue and green) with a few warm colours to complement it. The reason for choosing a cool colour scheme is because one needs a cool, calm and quite atmosphere for effective studies and research to go on. Most of the colours are used in their raw state giving the work a rich colourful and sweet sensation making the work enjoyable to watch. The work is titled KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.The work is done in semi abstract
