Kaputt Painting

"Artists who work in the abstract have to be strong of heart, because eliminating recognizable objects from the equation is like taking away a valuable tool. Like having a conversation without the use of words. Here María has succesfully done this with only a hint in the word Kaputt. Not strongly written, not loud and significant in shape, form or even colour. Slightly awkwardly scrawled like an afterthought. But I was engaged in this nonverbal conversation with the piece even before I found the word. So, it just intensified and satisfied my sense of what the painting evoked in me. And it made me laugh when it all came together. The irony of the kaputt-ness of our lives. The symbolic falling apart of even the most insignificant objects, like a planting pot left out in the winter because of our own laziness. Everything goes kaputt eventually. And when in life do, we not experience done finished kaputt? The human condition demands it. So, you see, that all of these feeling and thoughts that I the viewer was experiencing are the results of this artist's ability to manipulate colour form shape and line." Juror's Choice Award
