About The Artwork

This work started merely with the idea of laying a base layer of textured silver metallic paint, with a texture produced using a toothed silicone implement more commonly used for pottery or ceramic work, and then layering glazes over the textured base layer to achieve visual texture by sanding away the top layer of glaze to reveal the ridges of the metallic base layer. What actually happened was completely unexpected and the painting took an entirely different turn, as a layer of glaze applied with the painting upright results in paint flowing down into the grooves and producing a visual effect resembling a ceiling of stalactites. This effect, once observed, set the direction for the composition, and the conception of an abstractly represented domed city in the ice emerged. As with numerous other works, one objective in this work was to integrate free-form calligraphy, and this was accomplished via the illustrated "frame" around the central scene in the painting. In particular, given the cold nature of the tones in the scene, warm colors were chosen for the frame to contrast with the scene and to effectively embrace the cold with warmth. All in all, the work is very layered and incorporates numerous - and somewhat unusual - stylistic techniques, including an odd representation of the waves or ripples on the surface of a body of water (presumably) in the foreground leading towards the domed city. In keeping with the icy theme of the work, the impression of a reflective water surface overlaying the murky depths in which creatures lurk is created with simple diagonal lines and highlights, as if to suggest facets of an icy cold body.
