Koi, 1 Painting

I’ve wanted to do a series of lilies and koi for a couple reasons. First, I come from an East Asian family, and koi have a long symbolic history in Asian Art. Second, water lilies have a prominent place in Western Art, especially in the traditions that have heavily influenced me (I think especially of the relationship between Monet and Lichtenstein). In any case, this series will be a challenge series of sorts, with each painting done with a different restriction. In the case of “Koi, 1”, I wanted to only use one brush with relatively consistent strokes. The paint is high viscosity, with visible texture. I hope, in keeping with the East Asian tradition, that the imprecise style will draw viewers into contemplation of the depths of natural symbols.
