About The Artwork

I've always been inspired by the lively colours of Koi fish. These painting focus on the Koi with the pond falling to the background. Honestly it's the Koi that should attract everyone's attention. Koi is an informal name for the coloured varieties of carp kept for ornamental purposes. There are many varieties originating from breeding that began in Niigata, Japan in the early 19th century. Several varieties are recognized by the Japanese, distinguished by colouration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colours are white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, and cream.

As an artist working with oil on canvas, I find inspiration in the delicate interplay between nostalgia and memory. My artistic journey is a celebration of those fleeting moments that stick in our minds—the bits of life from the past and present that shape how we see things. I'm fascinated by the complexities of our minds as I navigate my way through the worlds of art and creativity, exploring their natural healing qualities. Every day, we decide how we view the world, and we have the power to choose how we react and how memories affect our behaviour. Besides my visual art, I express myself through music, playing the piano at weddings, funerals, and just for the joy of it. I believe in the shared power of celebrating, grieving, and expressing various emotions together. In my visual works, from the smallest details to larger scenes, each painting tells a purposeful story. My paintings come in different sizes, from small canvases that invite close inspection to larger pieces that fill a room and can change the atmosphere. I like to keep things simple with a classic, timeless gallery tray or box frame. Most of the work I exhibit draws from my personal memories intertwined with universal themes that resonate across different experiences. Whether recalling the warmth of childhood summers in South Africa or the comforting familiarity of English landscapes, each painting reflects shared feelings and collective nostalgia. As I immerse myself in the creative process, my aim is to evoke a deep sense of connection and introspection. The layers of paint blend, with undertones significantly influencing the viewer's experience—whether it feels cool or warm—similar to how layers of memory shape our identities. I hope that through my art, viewers are transported to moments in time that are both familiar and elusive—a transformative journey into the heart and, ideally, toward healing. In essence, I hope my work serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to transcend time, capturing the essence of what it means to be human. It's an exploration of the beauty found in the interplay between personal memories and the universal tapestry of memory.
