ABOUT THE ARTWORK

These watercolours are of the natural areas within the city of Toronto. This city contains many wild areas in its borders: ravines, creeks, Lake Ontario, islands off the south of the city. These areas are inhabited by wild animals, fish and birds as well as other creatures. The parks, ravines and water areas provide a respite from the dense and busy city atmosphere with their densely treed spaces.

Moira Clark was born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada where she currently lives and works. She began her art practice as a printmaker in etching but after fifteen years decided to start painting in acrylics. Over the years Clark has exhibited extensively in Toronto and across Canada with her work being held in many public and private collections. These include the Canada Council Art Bank, the City of Toronto Archives and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Teaching has been an important component of Clark's art career and she has taught children, adults and university students. She is currently a professor of painting at Sheridan College/University of Toronto at Mississauga. Her work is represented in Toronto by XEXE Gallery.Clark's work has evolved over the years from representational imagery to abstraction. Her early prints were based on domestic scenarios and still life but underneath this was a deeper interest in colour relationships and pattern as a compositional tool. Eventually the patterned, colourful backgrounds overtook the subject matter and became abstractions. Her latest paintings use landscape as a starting point for developing compositions involving grids. Bending the grid and playing with the artifice of perspective has been the most recent development.
