About The Artwork

This painting “Laminar Flow Over Wing With Eddy Current Turbulence” it intended to be a beauty for the eye, and a thought provoker for the mind, inspired by the beauty of nature. It is rare for anything in life to approach the beauty of nature, and the same holds true for the beauty of flow. The principles of flow allow us to build airplanes and ships. Laminar flow is a principle of physics, in which fluid flows in parallel layers, without mixing of the layers. This smooth flow is a beautiful phenomenon of nature. When the flows increase, or when they meet the boundaries of an object, the laminar flow may experience disruptive portions, known as eddy currents. This non turbulent flow has its’ own beauty, and is seen as “turbulence” or “imperfections in the otherwise beautiful laminar flow. The principles of Navier Stokes equations govern the principles of flow of Newtonian fluids. Laminar flow tends to be very beautiful, but the ability of a fluid, or air for that matter, to maintain laminar flow is dependent upon the Reynolds number of the fluid. The Reynolds number is a ration between the inertial force of a fluid, to the shearing force of the fluid. The lower the Reynolds number, the more conducive to laminar flow. For example, at high velocities, fluid, or air, is less likely to maintain the properties of laminar flow, and turbulence will set in. In this painting, the cross section of an airplane wing is represented, with the laminar fluid passing by it, below and above the wing. When a laminar flow fluid touches a solid surface, the layer of fluid adjacent to the surface stops moving, and progressive layers away from the surface move progressively faster. In this laminar painting, notice how the flow changes close to the wing versus away from the wing. The yellow and red which are at the front portion of the wing, have already passed the wing distant to it. The fluid flows slower in the microlayers adjacent to the wing. As to how the lift is produced under the wing, allowing the plane to rise, notice the difference and imbalance in the bands below and above the wing. This difference allows differential forces to create the lift on the wing. Behind the wing, notice the eddy currents, which forms as fluid flows in reverse, as it passes an object.

It is part of my mission, to share with my patrons who collect my art, the analysis which years of technical background have given to the appreciation of nature which surrounds us. It is through my intense journey into the depths of the analytical and technical analysis of the world, that my appreciation evolved and insight developed into appreciating the perfect and abstract beauty of the same. The laws of physics, chemistry, math, combined with an understanding of neural networks and cerebral processing, help us to greater appreciate the ethereal nature of the world about us. Each day the worlds best artists and the best scientists struggle to understand and explain the wonders of the world and universe. This holds true from the time of cave dwellers to the present. In 2,000 years, history will show us to be the cave dwellers. I hope that my works inspire and stimulate others to participate in this miraculous marathon of learning, understanding, educating, participating and growing.
