Painting, Mosaic on Other
Size: 18.1 W x 24 H x 1 D in
Ships in a Crate
I was inspired to create this mosaic by the Jurassic coastline near to where I live in Dorset. It contains many real fossils and shells, semi precious stones, and thousands of tiny glass beads, all of which are added one at a time. Beads include hematite, quartz, wood, jasper, mother of pearl, and agate. The small tiles which act as a frame are made from vitreous glass, and they surround a border of stone chippings inset with small shells. The whole piece is based on MDF, and is ready to hang.

United Kingdom
I have been making mixed media mosaics for several years in the UK, using traditional glass tiles, combined with beads, glass, stones, wood, metal, and semi-precious stones. Each mosaic takes many hours to make – sometimes as long as 200 hours or more, but I find the process totally absorbing, and the hours fly by. I'm inspired by the world around me, and also by the materials that I use – a certain coloured bead, perhaps, and the way the light reflects on it, or the way some stones, beads and other elements just seem to belong together. I spend several hours just planning a piece, deciding what elements to use and how to use them together. I have a vast collection of beads and stones etc, and just looking through them will often inspire another piece. No two mosaics will ever be the same, as the elements I use are often one of a kind pieces – sometimes antique or rare. I'm always experimenting with different media to give texture to my mosaics, and most of my works have raised, highly textured surfaces. I never know what I'll be using next, but I know it will never be boring........
