Denouncing a plot to kill the subjects of the Persian king Ahasuerus, Esther asks him "to spare her and her people's lives". She boldly takes advantage of this opportunity to assert her ethnicity to the king, who is intrigued and asks her to name the culprit in the plot. Symbolically, Esther's nets close on the traitor, Prime Minister Haman. Over the centuries, the character of Esther has found its way into religious writings, painting, literature, music, theatre and even comic strips.
