This is from my "City Tropics" series, part of the "Glass Houses" series. It is in a relatively small greenhouse on the property of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island NY. This small greenhouse has given me more images than any of the larger ones. It is part of a series I call "NYC Giverny." The greenhouse is my lily pond, a place of continuing inspiration and consistent imagery.

"I paint elusive interactions of light with tropical plants, a fragile reality, yet with all of light's power to make us feel, as well as see." Current painting series is called "City Tropics." Like Henri Rousseau in Paris, my experience of the tropical has been almost entirely in cities. Born Detroit, MI. Grew up in NYC metro area. BFA Pratt Institute, 1968. 1972-85 lived in Manhattan working in advertising and publishing and actively following the art scene. In 1985 moved to Connecticut, becoming Service Ombudsman for The Hartford Courant, daily newspaper. In 1991 moved to Florida: Working with former Apollo 11 aerospace engineers, at Northrop Grumman in Melbourne from 1992-2000. In 1993 resumed painting. In 1995 came to my signature image: tropical plants interacting with light. Exhibited extensively. Awarded signage position in the Art Center of Vero Beach Juried Exhibition in 2000. Hosted a cable TV art talk show, served a term as president of a 250-member arts organization and was a contributing writer for a monthly magazine. In April 2001 moved back to NYC, to paint full time. By the end of 2003 was supporting myself on sales of my paintings. Over eighty-five percent of my paintings, done since 1993, are in private collections. Art Red Spot Gallery, Westport CT, 2004-5 I enjoy interacting with potential collectors. An aerospace engineer once told me looking at art is like a hurricane because it is an exchange of energy. I put energy into the artwork and the artwork energizes the viewer. The handmade is especially beneficial in our increasingly virtual world. marylbullock.com, postcardsfromtherails.com
