About The Artwork

Leda Welcome! Enjoy the authentic and original art by Dutch artist Sylvia Thijssen. Title of the painting: ‘Leda’ Size: 150 x 100 cm (± 59,1 x 39,4 inches) Medium: this artwork is created with oil paint (upper layers) and acrylic paint (under layers). Painting will be shipped in a tube. Rolled works can be easily stretched (placed onto wooden stretcher bars) and/or framed by a local framer upon arrival. Dated: 2020, signed and dated on the front. Made in my studio in Breda, The Netherlands. Document of Authenticity included. ‘Leda’ is part of the Chateau d’Arte series, a series of monumental paintings in which personal stories intertwine with old myths. Created in the tranquility of the corona pandemic, these are my painterly Grand Cru's that show a world full of visual adventure. A few years ago I studied ‘Leda and the Swan’ while painting. I started from the painting by Leonardo da Vinci (painted around 1510-1515, oil on wood, 112 x 86 cm, Galleria Borghese, Rome). Of course, Leda couldn't miss in my series of narrative paintings! I started with a charcoal drawing and painted with my favorite Chinese brush with black paint. I recorded this on a YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI_m9x-8YzA While working in my studio, the corona pandemic developed. As a result, my daughter Iris, who had lived in Dubai for 7.5 years, resigned her job, to settle in the Netherlands with her boyfriend. She was born in May under the constellation Gemini (Castor and Pollux); an air sign that is always curious. For many years she worked as a flight attendant, a profession that gave her the opportunity to discover the world and visit special places. First with KLM, then with Transavia and in Dubai with the prominent airline Emirates. Instinctively, the swan in the painting became the KLM swan (prominent in their advertising campaign), and then Leda was dressed in the hat and scarf of the beautiful Emirates uniform. A bit naughty of course to connect an Islamic society with such a naked Leda. Dreaming and painting, two planes came into the air, a KLM and an Emirates plane. And there were more eggs such as a Kindersurprice egg. In this way, the old, mythological story became more and more connected with my own story. In a short docu I show you my latest series of paintings in my studio. In Dutch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPrjF3D0Irs&t=61s Living in a not-too-big city in the south of the Netherlands, the Dutch visual artist Sylvia Thijssen walks every day to her studio. It is a four kilometers walk wherein she crosses two small rivers. It is an excellent distance to free her mind of domestic affairs for to let the muse in. It is in this sunny, personal space that she paints her colorful canvasses, in active gestures big and small, like dancing, always trying to hear the colors sing together, searching for an energy wherein is also the peace of a moment in eternity, taking time as if the paint forms a structure that grew and matured. Thijssen is not thinking of her work as making paintings, no, these are adventures. Exciting adventures for her as a painter to make new experiences for the one who is looking at them. These adventurous paintings are meant to wander the mind and to wonder the eye. See also her website: http://www.sylviathijssen.nl
