Since 1995 I have been a graffiti writer. I was inspired by the graffiti masters born in the Bronx in the seventies. I have cultivated a long career in this world, painting walls and trains in my city (Milan) and European capitals. But my greatest aspiration was to paint the cars of the New York subway, where graffiti was born. So it was that in 2003 I arrived in the Big Apple and painted three subway wagons. It was like making a dream come true for me, to be able to touch those historic metal sheets. I then subsequently created a series of paintings in which I express all my research into the evolution of letters in the graffiti writing style. This work depicts the letter S, a letter that is part of my stage name (SAND), which I wanted to incorporate into a metropolitan scenario characteristic of New York subway stations. The letter is represented by the vertical section of the cutaway of a typical NYC subway station, while the three-dimensionality of the letter incorporates the different levels of the station, in which people's lives unfold while the trains I painted circulate. The concept therefore consists in the fact that the letter I evolved came to life and developed in these metropolitan environments and finally became their main structure.

Alberto Silva aka "SAND" is a graffiti writer. His career began in 1994, based on the evolution of letters, with which he created his own personal style. Evolving the letters of the alphabet is the main foundation on which the culture of graffiti writing rests and Sand has made it his life's purpose. His graffiti circulated on subway trains throughout Europe and New York City. It is inspired by the founding fathers of graffiti that originated in the Bronx in the 70s.During his thirty-year career, he has developed an obsessive search for letter shapes. Today his letters have taken on personal forms, embodying sinuous and dynamic forms that sometimes reach the appearance of aerodynamics or abstracts. In addition to hundreds of trains and walls, he also painted many canvases. His art is unconventional, but has developed in the streets illegally, with a form of total freedom. His defiance of the authorities was born to show everyone his name, with an irreverent spirit that despises the rules. He is labeled a vandal, but his graffiti is part of contemporary art. Having always been passionate about the classical art of the Renaissance and therefore the statues of the great masters such as Bernini and Michelangelo, he decided to set the evolution of his graffiti letters in marble. This pure and candid material has brought the letters to their essence, as the absence of colors has simplified them in their essential forms, but at the same time has made them eternal. Sand is a graffiti writer and a contemporary Italian artist. Since 1995, Sand's graffiti has left an indelible mark on Milan's cityscape, transforming mundane walls and railways into vibrant canvases that defy both social norms and artistic conventions. His early works were a bold opposition to authority and the law, a testament to his irreverent spirit that sought to shape his creativity in the most unapologetic way. Over the years, Sand's artistic expression has evolved into a personal rebellion, a vandalistic exploration driven by an obsession with the evolution of letters. In his quest to forcefully infuse creativity into the public sphere, Sand created an alphabet that adhered to his distinct stylistic rules, embodying an entirely unique form of expression. While continuing to wield the spray can as his weapon of choice, Sand, always hungry for new challenges, ventured into uncharted territory.
