Life-95 by Yangjoo Yoo Painting

A winning piece of Korea Modern Art Contest in 1995. Back in school, I was wandering around Gyeongbokgung Palace to find something to draw. However, nothing drew my attention. On the way back home, I found this obsolete sweet potato roasting machine sitting on a rickshaw, waiting for its days to end. I really liked the ambience around it. In 1995, Korea was rapidly growing that rickshaw-based businesses were being pushed out of the street. Yet they had been a part of our life for a long time. They might completely disappear one day, but I just want people to experience this era through my work. Back then, Korean Fine Arts Association offered ₩15,000,000 (about 15,000 USD) for this piece. However, I decided not to sell it because the norm was that you do not sell your first piece of work if it wins an award. Now it’s yours.
