Light at the End Painting

Ever since I was at school, I've been interested in astronomy. "Light at the End" was inspired by shape-shifting nebulae in outer space and how light and dark creates shapes and patterns. I can feel the temptation to fly through this channel as the light pulls me on. The title is also inspired by positive news after hard times. Challenging times, nonetheless, contain valuable lessons which we can bring to the light where we can understand them when times improve. Plus there's a hint of the supposed final journey we take in the moments after death: is the light simply our brains shutting down or are we onto our way to another life? I chose to paint the canvas a deep ultramarine as it's a colour that conjures up dreams and mysteries. I love the combination which black and silver, plus the tiny bit of red that highlights this abstract scene. The surface is highly-textured with paste and lit with silver leaf. Recently, I asked a local framer to set this work in a black box frame which finishes it off perfectly, making it read to hang.
