About The Artwork

One of several paintings produced as part of my final challenge in the Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2018 competition. I became fascinated by the underside of the pier and its structure, shapes and colours. I really started to notice the difference between the fun, musical, pretty topside of the pier we are presented with, versus the dark, slightly eerie, disturbing underside. I explored this contrast in all of the subsequent paintings of the pier, feeling that the word “underbelly” captured this nicely. In this painting, the lights on top of the pier were off, as if in the middle of the night, however it still feels lighter than the dark, underbelly. The underside or “underbelly” which is dark and is often a place for teenagers to hang out and retreat from the world.

Winner of 2018 Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year ! As a self taught painter, I have painted all my life and plan to start my MA next year! I am interested in: the landscape as psychology/psychological backdrop; the fragility of children and teenagers; themes around engagement/disengagement in activities; abandoned play and leisure environments. These painting themes also reflect my career in occupational therapy and coaching. Although it might sound like a strange mix, all these disciplines have a creative heart and believe in the potential for human beings to live engaged, meaningful lives. Outside of this, I am a bit of a geek and love the neuro and occupational science involved in the creative process, how we tackle risk taking as human beings and also stop ourselves from sabotaging our well-intentioned plans!
