About The Artwork

'Linen' is a series I began a couple of years ago.The paintings are inspired by a gorgeous, heavy antique Irish linen bedsheet that I came into possession of and still use. As an individual with tactile sensitivity, it has become a symbol of physical comfort and visual interest; heavy linen has a lustre and subtle reflectiveness of colour and form that is unlike any other fabric, and is one of the few textiles that increases in beauty with age and wrinkling- it is a worthwhile allegory of the processes of aging and of one's acceptance of the passage of time. The colour palette varies slightly from painting to painting, as I am interested in the different ways one can express whites. My original intent was to use a mixed media approach, but I discovered that Acrylics alone gave me all the language I needed to express the tonality and values, while keeping a freshness and simplicity to the work. I find that these pieces tell simple stories and invite the viewer to create their own. In this age of anxiety and stress, there are few things more reassuring, more real, more accepting, than the rest and comfort of soft, rumpled bed linens. This work is a smaller, more subtle expression in the series; focusing on warmer and cooler greys. As with all the works in this series, this painting is done on 140 lb. archival watercolour paper, so is best matted and framed under glass.

Personal explorations into the nature of Being and the human spirit are the overarching themes of my art. Whether I am exploring and interpreting a symbolic motif to glean manifold meaning from it, utilizing found and created objects to imbue a sculptural assemblage with a sense of person/soul, or creating painterly compositions of objects that give us human comfort, my work concentrates around the core of our Self; the common threads that link our collective existences. I am also influenced by mythographic writings, esoteric philosophy, and the effects of time, mental illness, stress and survival on today's urban wastelands.
