Just before lockdown started, I had a visitor to the studio. He introduced me to some very old Chinese music. One piece in particular stuck in my mind. It followed a river downstream, trying to evoke the different sounds and characters of the water as it progressed from bubbling stream through waterfalls to a meandering river. This somehow tied together many elements of my work and, on blue grounds, I started tracing the course of a leaf as it floated downriver. Many tangents later, I had paintings that seem radically different from those I made before. This was an attempt to scale up "Lockdown Painting 1" (also on this site) and build upon its strengths. It successfully captures what lockdown was for me. In my other existence I am an essential worker and felt a disquiet euphoria as I was able to roam deserted streets and silent motorways. The painting embraces all the ambiguities and contradictory emotions of those moments. At 100 x 150cm, this painting is large enough to be a statement within your room. It is made from professional quality oil paints and is painted on deep canvas. It is unframed.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
