I painted this when I was in a very long distance relationship. I wanted to evoke that feeling of longing for and missing someone, especially through the composition of this painting. The hands are at either side of the painting reaching for one another. The body language of the hands is quite desperate - to show the difficulties of long distance relationships. Simple things like communicating are much harder when there is such distance and time differences. Despite all of the difficulties, the dandelions fly in the wind to connect the couple. They represent the hope, growth and learning that come from a long distance relationship.

I am influenced by the work of artists like Jack Vettriano, who use dramatic lighting to convey a mood. However I am inspired by any artist that can make people feel something with their works, can prompt conversations between people or communicate with people in some way. I am most confident using acrylic paint on canvas but I experiment with other media too.
