The artwork is ready to hang and the wire and hooks are supplied. This work symbolizes the layers of memories of past events and people by drawing on familiar maps of my personal environment and words. Relating to street art, the obsessive use of the word 'Forget' drips and fills the background trying to obscure obviousness and raw emotion. This becomes a map of failures and success, a place where I lost myself and found my true self again. It represents all the different secret passages created by memories. The work is concerned with working through personal trauma and dealing with ways to remember and ways to forget. Past experiences can be a ‘lens’ with which we view our current experience and future events. By connecting fragments of words, places and images of forgotten memories in order to digest past trauma, art making becomes the healing ritual to reach a point of redemption. Nothing is really as it seems. There is usually another layer to excavate before real intentions are unearthed. Past memories and experiences are torn up and embedded to form a distorted new perception. We are our memories, but the challenge is to capture and make sense of our memories of events and work through emotional hangovers. Some memories fade away; some remain hazy; and some change over time. Memories are triggered by music, photo's, notes, journal entries etc. We sometimes just want to sweep memories under the carpet, but this will bring no healing because failing to deal with memories will make it surface and resurface. By facing our memories and emotions we create a map back to wholeness and redemption.
