Some years ago I read the memoirs of Giacomo Casanova. On a number of occasions I remember him mentioning the desires of the flesh. It is a phrase which has stuck with me since and that conjures within all manner of imagery. When searching the phrase I came across this excerpt from the Bible: Galatians 5:17-21 English Standard Version (ESV) For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. ESV® Text Edition: 2016. Copyright © 2001 by Crossway Bibles. This painting is also loosely based on an adult film still I discovered online. It represents a regressive style of painting for me which I had been experimenting with in the early part of 2015. A style where the human figure is caked from head to toe in a thick, two tone, impasto of acrylic paint. This painting can also be rotated ninety degrees anticlockwise for a subtle change in narrative or according to personal taste. As with many of my works on paper this painting has a worn appearance in areas due to being heavily worked and washed. Please refer to detail images for a closer look. There is a small perforation near the bottom edge of the painting. I have patched this up on the reverse. Unframed. Initialled and dated on the front. Signed, titled, dated and stamped on the reverse.

Milan-based British artist Denholm Berry approaches portraiture with an innovative and unconventional methodology. Blending psychological spaces with expressive physicality, the figures presented in the works are at once anonymous and inviting – emotions and identities are open to the viewer’s interpretation. “My hope is that, by filtering concepts in this unusual way, my obscurations will become paradoxically revealing.” Denholm’s unique artworks have been featured in many Saatchi Art collections and are held in private collections worldwide.
