Luminaire is a painting to be absorbed by. I paint for the encounter between the artwork and the viewer and with the sumptuous colours and depth of layering, this is a painting to really get lost in. Among the darker fields of paint, there is a luminosity to this painting that draws you in and can lift you up.

I have developed my own language using oil paint in a combination of very thick strokes applied with a palette knife, balanced with more fluid areas where the paint is immensely diluted with white spirit while retaining the trace of pigment.

This technique, along with the choices of colour, speaks of a process of seeking some form of truth while having it revealed to you in a two way process, almost like a conversation without words.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I am a process-driven painter, meaning that the creation of the artwork is entirely dependent on the moment that I share with the paints. I engage with the materials and the surface as if they are alive and we co-create the painting based on this real-time relationship. There is an element of laying down my ambition for the final image and instead entering a collaborative state where I can discern the direction of the composition and be led to create a painting that accurately embodies the time it was painted in. I work in oils, unusually on oil paper and all of my work is abstract. I work full time from my studio in Hove, UK and exhibit a few times a year in both solo and group exhibitions. You can read more about my artistic process on my blog.
