About The Artwork

The French expression 'Violon d'Ingres' (Ingres' Violin) is based on the passion that the French artist Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) had for playing the violin. It basically refers to something that a person does out of passion. In 1924, Man Ray created the artwork 'Le Violon d'Ingres'. It is a black and white photo of Kiki de Montparnasse with two f-holes in her back to make Kiki's body look like a violin. Man Ray then suggests that his Ingres' Violin is Kiki. The model for my painting is my wife. Giving the name 'Ma Kiki' (My Kiki, in French), I make a double reference to the idea of Man Ray: my wife is 'My Kiki' and my Ingres' Violin. This painting is, first of all, a tribute to my Muse; but also to the work of Man Ray and to Kiki de Montparnasse herself.
