About The Artwork

Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, better known as the "Mother of the Blues," started singing in black minstrel shows as a teenager. She claimed credit for creating the term "blues" when asked what kind of song she was singing one night in 1912. With her powerful voice, she made more than 100 recordings, some with Tommy Dorsey and Louis Armstrong. "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" has became a blues standard. This painting is part of a series: Women Sing The Blues. After watching a documentary about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I started thinking about other female artists who fought to have their voices heard - pioneers who influenced generations of singers and musicians. It is in these paintings, I wanted to capture their strength and beauty.
