About The Artwork
When I was in Xi'an, China, to see the Terracotta Warriors, I got some artful bookmarks at the local museum that featured a photo of an antique horse sculpture and illustrated how Chin Shi Wang Di (the emperor who founded the short-lived Chin Dynasty) codified the diverse scripts of the petty kingdoms he had conquered, in the example of "Ma", meaning "horse". In this painting I made my own version of the "horse" logogram and mimicked the horse-head illustrated on the bookmarks. In the center and corners I made images concocted from the carved sides and ends of a personalized "chop" (stamp seal) I got at a Buddhist temple in Shanghai.
