Made In China (part) Painting

Medium: Oil on canvasYear Created: 2002 Description: Dissident friends came from France to visit Australia. On the 2nd of May 2000, I took them to the Old Melbourne Gaol. At the service desk we happened to notice some souvenirs and small toys for sale (small handcuffs and pistols). As these friends had all been in Chinese jails for over a dozen years they regarded the small handcuffs with particular interest and feeling. Each of us bought a pair. We tried them on. As we did so I discovered that - significantly - each had China China engraved on it. Not, however, Made in China. Who in China made these small toys? Was it an ordinary worker? A prisoner? Or a child? These toys were for sale. Each costs $3.20, donated to Amnesty International.
