About The Artwork

The Ganges river is named after the Hindu river goddess Ganga, at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers. Here is one of the places where the river is "somewhat" clean. Depicted is Ganga riding atop her vahana (vehicle) Makara - a guardian of the gateway to the holiest of rivers in India's Hindu religion. I created this image as part of my fascination with the history and peculiar aspects of folklore and religion, in the context of a modern world. Sometimes those age-old beliefs begin to fray and crumble under the force of facts. Other times, they seem to evolve, becoming subtler, or bolder. But somehow, still a stronger fabric of their relevant cultures.
