About The Artwork

I "discovered" this old structure sitting overgrown and abandoned in North Carolina. Ironically, it was situated in a field in front of a Walmart. I found the juxtaposition of old and new architectural forms to be a revelation, creating perfect symbolic and visual contrasts between two disparate cultures of the South. The barn represents the traditions of the Old South, an insular, agrarian-based society. In contrast, the Walmart building looming in the background symbolizes the decay of past traditions and the rise of a consumer-based "civilization" of restrained material culture and reckless development that that is spreading across the South today.
