It was close to dusk on a safari tour chasing the big five in Kruger national park that we finally got a glimpse of the only leopard we saw that day. It was swift, very wary of the sound of the jeep and quickly made a run for it. She however stopped and glanced back at the jeeps before quickly retreating in the lush trees. I remembered that scene and unfortunately couldn’t get a nice photograph of that shot. But I did remember the light hitting the rim of the cat’s silhouette and the small sparks of lights coming through the trees. I purchased a few photographs of leopards in that position and went on to paint the scene I remembered. Leopards are known for their dark spots, basically light on dark and I wanted to have a background which contrasted this, i.e. a dark background of blurred trees with light spots. I also wanted to keep the look on her face as I remembered it, where she took one last look to make sure she wasn’t being followed before disappearing. I believe I managed to beautifully reproduce this scene in this piece, which took almost 2 months to complete.I hope I managed to convey the same feeling I had when it happened. Djcwildlifeart.com
