About The Artwork

The subject of shamans and healers is a subject that I am particularly passionate about, I have spent years reading and researching about it but in particular one catches my attention because of what it means in anthropological terms. María Sabina is undoubtedly the healer who, due to her wisdom and healing powers, literally became the most popular and sought-after healer in the entire world. A indigenous woman originally from the mountains of Oaxaca, María did not learn to read or write, however, she inherited from her father the gift of healing through the use of wild mushrooms, who received anyone who needed her support and never charged a penny for her services, even if they were rich; poor, famous or ordinary people, her vocation was to put her gifts at the service of others. To speak of María Sabina is to delve into a deep subject that would take me a whole book and a entire series of paintings and sculptures and it still wouldnt be enough to expose everything that I wish the world to learn about her. There are some people who believe that my work has to do with own own experiences from the consumption of mushrooms and hallucinogenic substances. What very few know is that I do not smoke, I drink little alcohol and I certainly do not consume any type of soft or hard drugs. My inspiration and knowledge in this regard are based on the study and research on other people's experiences and there is no more fascinating and mysterious character than is María Sabina. The fact that he was popular among the most famous influential artists, politicians, businessmen and relevant figures of the western world of her time speaks of how deep and powerful her healing work was, which by the way did not help her to lead a comfortable life, therefore she died the same as she was born, in poverty and in misery. MARÍA SABINA is a piece in which I capture the different stages of this Shamana's life, the lights and shadows, her happiness and sadness, the hatred and envy and the incomprehension of those who punished her because they thought that because she was a woman she had no right to gifts. María sabina, a multi panel original mixed media artwork made on canvas. It measures 170 cm x 510 x 5 cm. My approach to the arts began at the age of six with the study of piano and fine arts. As a teenager I got involved in theater and in that context, I discovered scenography and stage production which ended up shaping the worldview of my “artist self.” I studied architecture and for a short time I worked as a set designer and later I found my passion for cultural management, an area in which I discovered my vocation as an administrator, maker, creator, executor, and organizer, which would ultimately serve as a foundation for structuring my career as artist. After years of resistance I returned to the plastic arts and immersed myself in the study of the popular arts of Mexico as well as the analysis of the uses and customs of various indigenous peoples, focusing my interest on the visual aesthetics of their crafts, clothing, as well as its spiritual worldview and its symbolism at the same time that my passion for modern architecture and industrial, textile, furniture and automotive design gave life to a peculiar way of seeing art. My work is the reflection of all the above, it is the encounter of possibilities, the consequence of my desire to amalgamate concepts and styles that are often antagonistic to each other and of my interest in everything that does not have to be explained but rather felt, it is the encounter of the indigenous with the modern, the ancestral and the present, the abstract imagination with spatial formality, they are the celebration of my own meaning of being myself.
