The inspiration is the runners of the Amsterdam Marathon, they pass the studio every year. The first, the fastest, seem to float above the road, they hardly touch the ground. All day long, people run with so much dedication, enthusiasm and perseverance along the windows of the studio.
The Marathon is a modern art painting is made in a new style. It is a double layered transparent painting in a handmade frame of hardwood.
Using oilpaint and embroidery's in mixed media.
On the surface you can see the first two female runners of the marathon of Amsterdam. This part is painted and embroidered on a transparent surface. Their pants are embroidered with pearl buttons. The lady's are connected with a thin silver wire. To to emphasize the contrast in the painting, the artwork is a mix of fragile and industrial materials.
It is quite absurd to see them running in the cityscape, along the satelite dishes.
They look like fragile creatures in a technical or industrial environment. It looks likes they are torn from their original environment and are running in circles in the urban environment. Playing with their mobile phone. I don't judge it, but I have to laugh. I really like the urban life, but I do see the artificial side.
The image shows a contemporary fairytale featuring the surrealistic world of the cityscape.
Contemporary Dutch visual artist Hester van Dapperen adds depth to her paintings both physically and figuratively.
Van Dapperen uses the refined and raw material layers of which the artwork consists, instead of hiding the materials below the surface of the image.
Because of the layered, 3d structure of her work, the light that strikes the surfaces of the painting creates a dropshadow which changes depending on the angle of the light.
