Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

The Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona

Davis Lisboa, "Marcel Broodthaers #1", 2012, oil on canvas, 11,8 x 11,8 in

What / who inspired the work?
This work has been inspired by the spontaneity of studies of French Rococo paintings and also by a photograph of Marcel Broodthaers with a clown nose I downloaded from the Internet.

What do you hope viewers will feel / think?
First, I hope the viewers feel the delicacy of painting. Second, I hope they pay attention to the nose of the character and think what would be the meaning of this detail. A mockery? Whose? Whom? What?

At the same time, I hope the viewers remember that it is a Marcel Broodthaers' portrait, a Belgian artist who was the creator in 1968 of the "Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles" (Museum of Modern Art, Department of Eagles), a conceptual museum-work-of-art in Brussels. I also hope the viewers understand that I am creating a collection of oil painting portraits from historical artists who have created their own museums, as Marcel Duchamp (Boîte-en-valise), Robert Filliou (Galerie légitime) and Marcel Broothaers.

Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, style?
I chose oil painting on canvas, because I want to do an controlled exercise of light and darkness, which is the fundamental principle of any 2D visual arts such as drawing, painting, photography and more.
