Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, fabrics, and archival pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. In this painting, Peter Vahlefeld uses the real to disrupt the ideal. Through commercial images of fashion models, products, and advertisements, in this case an ad for a Louis Vuitton bag with a Van Gogh still life, chosen by Jeff Koons, he subverts the residual authority of established artistic genres, merging it with the increasingly pervasive image culture of the present. For a range of handbags, Jeff Koons is turning great art back into popular culture as Peter Vahlefeld turns popular culture back into art. Central to Peter Vahlefeld’s practice is his modulation of oil paint with a variety of mediums, including pigments and pigment prints, resulting in a visceral, thickly impastoed surface.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Hong Kong and Hamburg (Germany). He studied fine arts at Parsons School of Design, NYC and currently lives between Berlin and Munich. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions and art fairs, including Art Fair Cologne, Art Karlsruhe (both Germany), Art Bodensee, Art Innsbruck (both Austria) and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), and Sotheby's (Vienna). He was featured on the German television channel ZDF, and his work can be found in corporate collections throughout Germany as well as in private collections worldwide.
