JOE EZO WIPPLER 917 660 5407 I was born in 1963 in New York city and raised in the cusp of traditional Puerto Rican spiritual culture and the cynicism and spectacle of modern American city life, this initially formed the well from where my work evolves. at the age of 6 I moved to Vienna, Austria with my family for 2 years. the duality of receding old world sensibilities and the coming of new change were evident to me at a young age. Returning to NY in 1971 we moved into an apartment in Queens. It was in this apartment where I began looking and studying the modern Masters of sequential Art, Ditko ,Corben, Eisner, Frazetta, Bode. I also became enamored with the Northern renaissance Masters, Durer, Grunewald. In 1978 I went to the High School of Art and Design, it was when I first heard The Ramones and The Clash and picked up my first Spray can and Hit my first Train. In 1983 I began working at Latin New York Magazine with Izzy Sanabria. It was here where I first got published and created concert posters for Tito Puente, Celia Cruz , Fania Allstars, Yomo Toro. I also wrote and illustrated my strip and did spot illustrations for various articles, under the direction of Mr. Sanabria who was a Great mentor to me. In 1986 I moved to Harlem with my wife Paula and built a family. It was around this time I began painting murals in the neighborhood. Particularly east Harlem on 3rd avenue from 116th to 124th and across 110th st. I graduated with a BFA in 1989 From SVA. I have been exhibiting my work here in New York city and in Europe since 1983. I brought back The Graffiti hall of Fame in 1996 and put together its yearly get together of Artists and its recreation until 2000. It continues to this day. In 1999 I opened The Gspot Colab gallery on 112th street and it continued until 2004 I won a brio award in 1993 for a one year residency at long wood arts. My work has been featured in various film and television productions such as PINERO and MY BROTHER, LOVE BEATS RHYMES, JENNIFER JONES, DREAM YEAR and others I work in Oils, Aerosol and various mixed media on linen and paper and MetalI use fire and water to manipulate my mediums and create surfaces of different levels of opacity... As a Street/ Graffiti Artist, I work primarily in aerosol. . As an Artist I wish to engage the viewer with images and concepts that will inform and test their sensibilities of cultural and emotional self.
