The monument of Elector Maximilian of Bavaria is a bronze sculpture artfully made by Bertel Thorvaldsen. Standing at the Wittelsbacher Platz in Munich this Equestrian Statue remembers a souvereign with visions and strong self-assertion. He was quite successful during his reign facing enormous challenges. I was questioning myself whether he could be a role model for us today regarding his general education and prudently acting. Some informations [Wikipedia]: »The Elector Maximilian I (1573-1651) is one of the most important Wittelsbachs alongside King Ludwig I and Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian. Although the Duchy of Bavaria was already established at the time of his birth, in the time of his reign even greater challenges followed, such as the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). As early as 1593, he was introduced to the affairs of state of his father, until he resigned on February 4, 1598 in favor of his son. He was soon able to regulate the difficult financial situation. which required a comprehensive reorganization of his domain in all areas. However, this also meant interference in the occupation of the church offices and an end to the influence of the estates, so that he brought Bavaria with a more effective bureaucracy on the path of absolutism. His devotion to the papacy and profound religiosity was advantageous to him, and the spread of Marian devotion was a matter of concern to him. In his reign, however, as well as the Marian Column, the strong expansion of the residence in Munich, which is described by Dieter Albrecht (1990) as "of imperial proportions" 1 falls. In addition, he was an art collector, such as the works of Albrecht Durer, promoted art and science or as Albrecht expresses "one of the fathers of Bavarian Baroque culture.«
