About The Artwork

Another one in my series of paintings inspired by my favourite jazz music. This one is inspired by John Mclaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra’s ‘Meeting of the Spirits’. The painting was an attempt to show the flow of energy through the universe. I’m fascinated with the idea that everything is constantly fluid and in motion. I don’t pretend to be any kind of expert on quantum physics but the connection between that and the Buddhist view of emptiness/infinity are recurring themes in my abstract work. Emptiness in this sense implies infinite possibility rather than absence. I think me returning to this concept so often in my work is a reflection of my own journey in trying to let go and accept change. There are areas of impasto contrasting with areas of many thin glazes creating a translucent effect. You can see soft dry brush blending as well as some spontaneous palette knife work. Zao Wou-Ki’s work was particularly important in creating this piece. His use of abstract expressionist techniques combined with the calligraphic marks of his Chinese heritage were very influential on me. My other main references are JMW Turner, Monet and contemporary artists Chu Te Chun, Darren Waterston, Lissa Bockwrath, Chris Rivers, Ella Baudinet and Cruz Jimenez. I hope the viewer can feel a sense of infinite possibility when they look at this painting. This work is painted on a canvas board panel (not stretched canvas on stretcher bars). It will look best framed with a floating mount.

I was born in Kent, UK and have lived in London, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a designer for 25 years, juggling running a design practice with painting and exhibiting my art. Gradually the art has taken over from the design and I’ve been a full time artist since 2016.
