Melancholy Hybiscus Painting

"Melancholy Hibiscus" I live in a condo in New Jersey. One advantage to condo-living is that the surrounding landscapes are consistent and cared for by the condo association on a regular, no problem basis. A distinct disadvantage is that there is little opportunity for a frustrated gardener like me to plant personal flowers or bushes around my space. This watercolor of a beautiful hibiscus flower is from a photo taken on my very small patio. My resolution to this problem was to do a lot of planting in pots that I was free to move around at will, but often "required" to sacrifice to the Winter each year. This watercolor of a double bloomed, melon-colored Hibiscus is a favorite from photos of my very temporary collection of potted plants last summer. As I sat in my very plastic white rocking chair, their brilliant color and pleasing composition against my very plastic white fence, (not shown) transmitted calming reflections, melancholy thoughts, and memories of gardens lost. I am especially pleased in this painting titled "Melancholy HIbiscus" by the presence of reflecting shadows shown in the background to create a third dimension for the viewer and for me, relief from my plastic, temporary world.
