Mere, Mere II is the companion piece of Mere, Mere I. Youth know the sting of racism—sometimes in ways only understood from their viewpoint. Faceless images serve as representations of all children and depict the intermingling and interaction with the world around them. This work describes how this African American boy is made to feel different and how that affects the way he view himself--ergo the image in the mirror reflects what he believes he has to be—not how he was created. The boy is painted red; a visual indicator used in society to sound off a warning. The monochromatic hues in the background and middle ground stand in sharp contrast. They often point to the potential of a bleak, purposeless, uncertain future—if present conditions remain unchanged. The symbols at his feet represent a path of uncertainty and ambiguity. The viewer is asked to consider the impact a racially-focused society can have on youth’s cultural identity in the future. How does this shape the way they relate to the larger community in the present? Note: This is the companion piece to Mere Mere I, a diptych. If both pieces are purchased, the buyer will save $100.
