Mermaid's Lament Painting

This piece is inspired by a mixture of Anderson's original telling of "The little Mermaid," as well as Disney's popular depiction of the famous Siren. In Anderson's original telling of the story, the little mermaid must choose to take the life of the prince--with a magical knife her sisters had the sea witch make in exchange for their hair--after he chose to wed another, in return for more years as a mermaid. If she chooses not to kill the prince, which is what she chose, then she is to return to the sea and turn to seafoam, with no chance of a mortal afterlife, which would have been granted to her had she married the prince and become human. However, she is visited by aerial spirits (see where Disney got her name) that grant her 300 years as a spirit, to prove that she is worthy of a mortal death, and entrance into a mortal heaven, because of her selfless sacrifice.
