Met-a-phors 5 Painting

This painting is part of my Washed Ashore series where I have been interpreting my memories of seeing the earth from a plane when I first left Cuba. I was only seven then, and it was my first time in an airplane. I remember how different everything seemed from above, but also how much pattern and repetition was in the landscape. I started the Washed Shore series with the intention of creating abstract landscapes based upon these images. I create the patterns and shapes of the design by "sculpting" plaster into the desired shapes. This gives the painting dimension and texture, as well as shadowing.
