The golden hour. One of those idyllic times when every color is extremely vibrant and stand out even more because of the contrast in the shadows that suddenly become apparent everywhere you look. I tried my best to capture that liquid golden light that played across the ground in front of me positive that the soul of the painting lay in there. But too my surprise the ethereal quality of the light only shone through when I captured the shadows correctly and the space between the light and the shadowline was where the soul finally came through. And sure enough it was my dog in front of me whose sillouette gave me the clue I needed to unlock this painting from my mind to share it with you ...thank you for looking.

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
